A woman was found dead in her vehicle outside a police station in Lake Illawarra, Australia, after going unnoticed for three days. The body was discovered around 16:30 on December 5, 2025, by officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District. Early reports indicate that the woman had been in her car since approximately 18:30 on December 2, 2025.
According to Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar, CCTV footage revealed that the woman had entered the police station on December 2, where she interacted with police officers and spent time in the foyer. After leaving the station, she reportedly returned to her vehicle. The woman, who has not yet been formally identified, was 48 years old, as confirmed by paramedics from New South Wales Ambulance.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are the focus of a critical incident investigation led by the South Coast Police District. Assistant Commissioner Cassar noted that the woman appeared to be living in her vehicle, which likely contributed to the advanced state of decomposition observed when her body was found. He stated, “The weather has been hot, the vehicle was locked, there would have been exceptional temperatures inside the vehicle.”
Police are working to determine whether the woman sought assistance from the police during her visit or intended to file a report. A crime scene has been established, and the investigation will also undergo an independent review by the Professional Standards Command, with oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission. A report will be prepared for the Coroner to further assess the situation.
A spokesperson for New South Wales Police confirmed that the investigation aims to clarify the events leading to the discovery of the woman’s body. The tragic incident has raised concerns regarding the support systems in place for vulnerable individuals who may be in distress.
As authorities continue their investigation, they are appealing for information from the public that may assist in understanding the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
