Merry Hill Celebrates Amelia Kolpa’s Birthday with 300,000 Cards

On March 12, 2024, the Merry Hill shopping centre in Dudley hosted a vibrant celebration for Amelia Kolpa, marking her eighth birthday with a remarkable display of community spirit. The event aimed to help Amelia achieve her dream of breaking the world record for the most birthday cards received on a single birthday. Battling neuroblastoma, a rare cancer primarily affecting children, Amelia has spent much of her young life in and out of hospitals since the age of two.

Amelia’s wish ignited a wave of support from the West Midlands and beyond. Thousands of birthday cards poured in from across the globe, with contributions arriving from Canada, Colombia, and China. As of the birthday celebration, more than 300,000 cards had been collected, with the count still ongoing.

Community Comes Together

The atmosphere at Merry Hill was electric as supporters and well-wishers gathered to participate in a Macarena dance in Amelia’s honor. Many attendees paused their shopping to join the festivities, demonstrating solidarity and joy for the young girl’s milestone. The event was organized by Charmaine Grace from Party Angels, who expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming community support.

“It’s been absolutely amazing,” Grace commented. “It’s such a great show of support; everyone has come out and really helped to make Amelia’s dream come true. I’m really proud to see so many people here. Amelia is at home right now, but I can’t wait to see her face when she sees the video; it’s going to be amazing.”

Among those showing their support was Matt Lemm, owner of Lockside Steakhouse, who personally collected over 70,000 cards, including those gathered during a bike ride that involved more than 2,500 participants in the streets of Rowley Regis. Lemm expressed his astonishment at the community’s response, initially estimating around 27,000 cards but now witnessing the total surpass 300,000.

“It’s just so amazing to see so much support for Amelia, and for everyone to come together to make her dream come true,” Lemm added.

Continuing the Celebration

The total number of cards is still being finalized, with a complete tally expected to be announced next week. Organizers continue to accept cards for Amelia, providing several drop-off locations including Party Angels in Wolverhampton and Highfield Primary School in Rowley Regis.

This heartfelt initiative has not only highlighted Amelia’s courageous battle against cancer but has also united communities in a powerful show of empathy and support. As the world rallies around her, the celebration of Amelia Kolpa’s eighth birthday serves as a reminder of the strength of community and the profound impact of collective goodwill.
